General Notes

There are two ways to send greeting cards at Ze-Card.
First, you can send your greeting card directly to the recipient's email inbox. In this case, the card will be delivered to the recipient's mailbox as an HTML document and the image and music file you have chosen will automatically be downloaded when the recipient opens the card.
Second, you can send your card as an attachment - the HTML document will be sent as an attached file and the recipient will open the card in a web browser.

Web-based mails, such as HotMail, Yahoo! Mail, Excite Mail, Net@ddress etc., are supported.

To create a greeting card at this site, you need a web browser which supports JavaScript. I.e. you can use Netscape Navigator 3 and higher, MS Internet Explorer 3 and higher, AOL 3 and higher. If you are using one of these browsers but can't create a card, most likely you have JavaScript disabled on your browser. In this case you have to go to the Preferences (Internet Options) of your browser and change appropriate settings.

Step 1. Image

Select some category and click on the thumbnail of the image you would like to send. That's it.

Step 2. Background

You can choose either some picture (texture) or color for your card background.
Please see the note on Netscape Navigator 3 below.

Step 3. Border

In brief: complete this step only if you are sure that the recipient does not use Netscape Navigator 3. Otherwise skip to the next step.

In detail: Netscape Navigator 3 can only display grey borders and can't use a picture as a background of a bordered area. A bordered area it can paint over some color, and a picture it can use as a background of a whole page only.

If you decide to use a border choose its thickness in the selection list and then click on the color you like.

Step 4. Text

When you click the 4.text at the top of the window, a text area appears on your screen where you can write your message. Use carriage returns (the Enter key of your keyboard) to format the text even if your browser automatically breaks lines. Otherwise the recipient may receive your message as one long line.
After you have finished writing, click the Done button.

Also you can change the font face, size, style and color. Click on the corresponding selection list and customize the font as you wish.
If you choose the font not installed on your computer, your browser will use its default font to display the text on your screen. And if that font is not installed on the recipient's computer, her or his browser's default font will be used to display your message.

If you want to edit the text but there is no text area in the main frame, just click once again on the 4.text at the top of the window.

About 10KB of text allowed.

Step 5. Music

To hear a piece, click on its title. You may be asked whether you want to open the file or save it to disk. Choose 'open it'. The title of the piece you have chosen will appear at the bottom of the card. And when the recipient receives the card, there will be control buttons to play and stop the music on the card.

To turn off the music playing in background, click the Stop button on the preview window toolbar or make the preview window active and press the Esc key of your keyboard.

Step 6. Send

In brief: if the recipient uses MS Outlook Express or Netscape Messenger uncheck the send as an attachment check box.

In detail:

To make a form field active, click on it. Then you can type in an appropriate value.

The name fields. These fields are optional.

The email fields. Check the addresses carefully before you click the send button. If you mistype even one character in the recipient's address she or he will not get your card.
And if you mistype your own address the recipient will not be able to reply you. Besides, you will not receive the failure notice if the recipient's mail server is down or if you mistyped her or his address too.
Type in full addresses! I.e. some_name@aol.com, and not some_name only.
Remove spaces from addresses including redundant spaces before and after the address. And if you copy an address from some sentence make sure you don't grab a punctuation mark along with the address.

The subject field. Type in the subject of your message (optional).

The send me a blind carbon copy of the card check box. If you don't want to receive a copy of the card uncheck this check box.

The send as an attachment check box. If the recipient uses MS Outlook Express or Netscape Messenger send your card directly to her or his inbox (click the send as an attachment check box to uncheck it). It is very convenient to receive such a card - the recipient simply opens it in her or his inbox like a regular email.

And if the recipient uses other mail program or you are unaware of which mail program she or he uses, then send the card as an attachment (just leave the send as an attachment check box checked). The recipient will be able to receive your card with any MIME compliant mail program and she or he will open it in a web browser.
Most mail programs, such as Netscape Messenger, Netscape Mail, MS Outlook, MS Outlook Express, MS Internet Mail, AOL, CompuServe, Eudora, WebTV, web-based mails, are MIME compliant.

In both cases the recipient does not need any password to pick up your card and she or he does not need to visit this site to view your card since it is on her or his disk already.

Currently we don't provide senders with returned receipts. If you've seen the confirmation message ('the card has been sent from ... to ...') then your card has actually been sent. If you mistype the recipient's address or your card is undeliverable for some other reason you'll get a failure notice. And if you haven't received a failure notice then your card has been delivered to the recipient's mail server and the recipient will get your card as soon as she or he checks her or his mailbox.

Don't look for the sent card in the Sent Items of your mail program. It is not there because cards are being sent by our mail server, not yours. If you want to keep your card in your mail program just choose to receive a copy of the card (leave the corresponding check box checked).
